Many European countries have engaged in austerity. Austerity can actually make it MORE difficult to get deficits under control. Greece, Portugal, Ireland, and Spain have been the leaders of this effort since 2009.

Economic mobility depends on what state you live in. Some states make it difficult to move up the ladder, like states in the South where poverty is more widespread. Green states have greater mobility than the national average and red states have less mobility than the national average.
